Our visit to the Scheiblhofer winery

We visited our long-standing partner in Andau.

A symbiosis of elegance and exclusivity.

Last week we visited our long-standing partner, the Scheiblhofer winery in Andau. The wine served at our events and appreciated by our customers mostly comes from the regions around Lake Neusiedl. We toasted this long-standing partnership with the legendary Battonage from the 2015 vintage.

To the wine:

The main component consists of Blaufränkisch grapes, which, like the Cabernet Sauvignon, come from the mineral-rich sites of the Leitha Mountains in Jois. The third grape partner is fully ripe Merlot from the Andau estate. On the day of the harvest for each variety, the vineyard is thinned out in search of fully ripe to slightly overripe grapes. These are cold macerated at 4° Celsius and then fermented.

100 Falstaff points:

For the first time, 100 points were awarded to an Austrian red wine at the first overall tasting of the cult red wine from Burgenland called Batonnage. All 15 vintages of Batonnage produced to date were tasted and evaluated together with the Premiers Grands Crus Classés from Bordeaux in a blind tasting by an illustrious 23-member jury.

Meaning and naming:

During the ageing of wine, yeasts are produced during the fermentation process (mainly in white wine). The winemaker sometimes leaves some yeast in the barrel during ageing. Batonnage is the process of stirring the yeast to protect it from decomposition.

During the storage period, the winemaker repeatedly stirs the young wine in the barrel. The agitation clarifies the wine and the batonnage also causes the wine to round out and gain fullness and a fruity, creamy flavour. Batonnage is therefore a process for improving the quality of wines during storage.

The very rare cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Blaufränkisch comes from the best vineyards around Lake Neusiedl, is an incredibly concentrated wine made from highly ripe grapes with 15% alcohol and is bottled in an extraordinary bottle and sealed with wax. Batonnage already won a gold medal at the 2003 London Wine Challenge and, at the latest since it was the first Austrian red wine to be awarded the maximum score of 100 points by Falstaff, it is no longer just an insider tip, but perhaps the best wine in Austria
